2015 Photography Wish List

I’ve never written one of these, but find myself reading plenty of them, so I thought I’d make my own blog post detailing the next batch of camera equipment I’m looking to get. Read on and click through to find out more information about where to buy etc.

Now that Christmas has been and gone, our consumerist culture comes into full swing with ridiculous sales and bargains flying about everywhere. Side note: I’ve never actually picked up that much of a bargain for photography equipment in the January sales, but here’s to hoping 2015 will be successful!

The equipment I’m mainly looking to get over the next few months is mostly steered towards improving my filmmaking, but I like to make sure as much equipment as possible can also be beneficial for photography.

Take a read through my list below and leave a comment if there’s anything you’ve got on your own list!

Canon EF 16-35 f4L IS

Canon EF 16-35 f4L IS

I’ve had a Sigma 10-20mm lens as my main ultra-wide glass for a number of years now but have found myself not using it all that much anymore since having a few L series lenses. So I’ve been looking for a replacement wide angle for a while.

The Canon 16-35 f4L IS is a great lens with super sharp details and most importantly an image stabiliser (which is mostly unheard of in such a wide angle). The IS should be extremely useful when used for filming and I’m hoping to get some good use out of it on my GlideGear DNA5050.

Canon EF Extender 2x III

Canon EF Extender 2x III

My favourite lens to use is my 70-200mm f/2.8L as it’s incredibly sharp, has a super fast auto-focus and in travelling terms isn’t ridiculously large. Every now and then though I could do with a bit of extra focal length. Forking out a few thousand pounds on another long telephoto isn’t really worth it considering how little I need the extra length. This is why I’m looking to get an extender that would double my lens to become a 140-400mm.

LED Ring Light

I’m pretty desperate for some better lighting to improve the quality in my videos (you should subscribe to me on YouTube by the way). Space is limited in my little work room, so I thought that getting a large ring light would solve my lighting needs whilst also maintaining a relatively small footprint regarding tripods and light stands as the camera would sit inside the light itself.

For too long, I’ve been using mirrors and tinfoil for reflecting light around the place. It’s about time I actually bought a proper reflector!

External Monitor

At the moment, I’m unsure what display I’m looking to get, but I know that I would like something around 7 inches in size and will need some form of magic arm to hold it in place.

Canon EOS 7D mkII

Canon EOS 7D mkII

Since buying the 70D earlier in the year, I’ve been enjoying having a two-camera setup using my old camera as a secondary system. I’ve really enjoyed some features on the new camera such as the aesthetics of the buttons and click wheels. They’re so smooth and responsive! Most importantly I’ve enjoyed the ability to shoot film. I’m currently contemplating whether to get the 7DmkII for use as my main photography camera and keep the 70D as a goto video system. The 10fps on the 7D is a feature that’s really tickled my fancy…

Come February/March there may even be a replacement to the 5D mkIII (as rumours are currently suggesting), so maybe I’ll wait out for that and see what full frame options I will have

Go Pro HERO4

Go Pro HERO4

I’ve used a few GoPros over the past year and I absolutely love them! The ability to have such a high quality camera in small compact form is so exciting to me! I’m interested in getting the Hero4 black edition to try my hand at some 4k footage and possibly even getting a secondary Hero because they’re super cheap and get involved with some dual-camera setups.

Fujifilm X100T

Fujifilm X100T

This is more of a nice-to-have item than something I’m definitely planning to buy. The x100S really appealed to me as a small street photography camera in a beautiful casing and it’s since been updated to the X100T. I’ve not played with one for very long, but I got all passionate and enthusiastic when I did!

This just about rounds up everything I’ve got in mind to buy in the near future and I’m also planning to write more blog posts about the equipment I use as more and more people are asking me about it!
