Video Inspiration: Surfing the Ends of the Earth

As I’m getting into filmmaking on the back of 8 years of photography, I thought it would be good to start sharing some of the inspirational short films that have lead me in this direction.

I’ve always been fascinated by moving image and have always been actively ‘favouriting’ and ‘liking’ videos across YouTube and Vimeo from when I first discovered them. At one point I even built a whole website to consolidate people’s visual activity across the web into a handy grid for easy consumption. I called it GridShare and it was my final piece of work that I did at University. I’ve often thought about rebuilding it, amongst all my other projects, but I think it will definitely remain on the backburner for a little while longer.

Take a look at GridShare in my portfolio

I’m still consuming and favouriting videos, though I’m not necessarily sharing them as collections, so I thought this blog would be a good place to list them out as I find them.

Discovered this Week

So, without further ado, here’s a video I discovered in the past week (I think it was recommended to me through YouTube’s automated algorithm).
Arctic Swell – Surfing the Ends of the Earth is a short film documenting a photographer, Chris Burkard and his journey taking photos of surfers in the Arctic Circle… that’s right, surfing in the Arctic. Not only are the surfers absoluteley nuts, but so is the footage.
